June 2004

Welcome to the June edition of Your Healthy Life, and happy Father's Day! This is an important time to let our fathers know what they mean to us. I know that my own father, Harry Powers, a painter and sculptor of international renown, has set me an example of true greatness. He has had—and continues to have—a tremendous influence on me, with his unceasing kindness, support, and generosity of intellect, heart, and spirit.

Speaking of the men in our lives, June is an important month for their health, as well. Please note the details for Men's Health Week, along with the other important national health observances this month. These include:

Healthy Weight Loss Tip Of The Month
Think more, not less. Get more fresh produce in your life by:

  • Taking 30 minutes over the weekend to wash, chop, and store vegetables for the coming week. You can keep your chopped carrots, broccoli, red bell pepper, cherry tomatoes, and other veggies fresh in a Tupperware container, ready for pasta primavera, stir-frys, burritos, and salads for the busy weekdays to come.
  • Enjoy a more nutritious pasta sauce by adding pureed, steamed veggies, such as zucchini, broccoli, and carrots to your marinara sauce. After adding Italian seasonings and garlic, you will have a luscious, super-nutritious sauce.
  • Keeping a platter of chilled, sliced fruits and veggies with some low-fat dips around the house in the afternoon and evening when the family is looking for something to snack on. They will gather around for nutritious nibbles and forget the chips and cookies in the cupboard... and so will you!
  • When traveling, be sure to have an apple, orange, and banana in your carry-on bag. This will save you from being at the mercy of fast-food when your blood sugar dips. You can also grab a chilled V8 juice instead of a soda for an energy boost and veggie servings to boot! Try the spicy version for a nice punch.

Health Tips & Updates
Cigarette Smoking and Bone Health

If you are still smoking cigarettes, perhaps you'll consider terminating this incredibly harmful practice once and for all when you learn this fact: In addition to the myriad harms you are inflicting on your system with each puff, smoking may be the most destructive lifestyle habit of all in destroying bone health in women—especially older women. 1

When you inhale cigarette smoke, your lungs are exposed to nearly 500 harmful gases, including carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, benzene, hydrogen cyanide, and ammonia. The infusion of these gases, along with other carcinogens, such as anabase, nicotine, mononicotine, reduces the available oxygen used for building bone and other tissues.

Research 2 indicates that bathing the body in these chemicals results in:

  • Reduction in bone density
  • Low back problems
  • Increased fracture risk
  • Reduced chance of bone healing

For the sake of your bones—and the vast array of additional health concerns you know only too well—make today the day you quit smoking once and for all.

Colon Cancer — Can You Prevent It?

Did you know that colon cancer is almost totally preventable? According to Dr. Richard Adrouny, a Los Gatos, California oncologist, if people are screened in time and have any precancerous polyps removed, the problem is essentially solved. The American Cancer Society has since adopted this theory.

Last year, 240 people in Santa Clara County died of colon cancer, and 660 new cases were diagnosed. Nationally, colorectal cancer kills more than 56,000 Americans each year, making it one of the leading causes of cancer deaths, according to the American Cancer Society. Ironically, only about 40% of Americans are regularly screened for this disease.

The most accurate mode of testing is the colonoscopy, which uses tools to look inside the body. As Dr. Adrouny says, the idea that colon cancer can be prevented is neither radical, nor unrealistic. Especially if you more than 40 years old, consider getting yourself screened immediately. Remember, disease is largely an option. Opt for wellness!
