May 2003

Welcome to the May issue of Your Healthy Life, and happy Mother's Day!

May is an outstanding month for health observances, far more than we can feature here. We will, however, spotlight National Osteoporosis Prevention Month, as osteoporosis currently affects more than 25 million Americans, 80% of which are female. Although it may impact women as early as in their 30s and 40s, it can be prevented if caught in time.

Getting an initial baseline—achieved through bone density screenings—is key to prevention. Learn more by visiting the National Osteoporosis Foundation. Most importantly, consider a bone density screening if you have not yet had one.

For more information about affordable testing in the greater San Francisco Bay Area, contact kiki@aboutnhs.com. Additionally, please see Nutrients and Osteoporosis below, to become more informed about an easy, but highly effective, disease prevention tool.

According to the American Stroke Association—the division of the American Heart Association that's solely focused on reducing disability and death from stroke through research, education, fund-raising, and advocacy—stroke kills more than twice as many American women as breast cancer each year.

Take the time now—during National Stroke Awareness Month—to learn how to identify the symptoms of stroke and how to manage the risks associated with this disease by visiting www.americanheart.org.

May is also Skin Cancer Prevention and Detection Month, which offers a great opportunity to learn how we can more effectively protect ourselves from skin cancer—the most preventable cancer of all.

Osteoporosis is a major health concern today, affecting more than 25 million Americans, 80 percent of which are female. It is a systemic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue. The good news is that many osteoporosis risk factors—such as the quality of our diet and vitamin/mineral intake—are actually under our own control, enabling us to take action to help prevent this debilitating health problem.
